What is CNN Heroes?
CNN Heroes is an annual initiative by CNN that recognizes everyday people making extraordinary contributions to their communities and the world. These individuals, often unsung heroes, are nominated by others for their humanitarian work, and they come from diverse backgrounds and causes—ranging from education and environmental conservation to healthcare and social justice.
Each year, CNN selects 10 "Top 10 CNN Heroes," who are highlighted in a special televised event. One of these finalists is then chosen as the "CNN Hero of the Year," which comes with a monetary award to support their cause. The event is meant to inspire others by showcasing the positive impact that ordinary individuals can have when they dedicate themselves to helping others.
The program has been running since 2007 and has honored hundreds of individuals for their outstanding efforts in making a difference.
What does it mean to you to be nominated?
Being nominated as a CNN Hero is incredibly humbling and an honor that I never expected. To me, it’s a reflection of the impact that Dogs Matter is having on people’s lives, and that’s what this is really about—helping others. When I started Dogs Matter, the goal was to ensure that people struggling with addiction wouldn’t have to choose between getting the help they need and keeping their beloved dogs. This nomination isn’t just about me; it’s about the incredible team, volunteers, and supporters who have worked tirelessly to make this mission a reality.
What this nomination truly means is that we’re reaching more people and spreading the message that recovery is possible without giving up your best friend. It’s a platform that helps raise awareness, not just for Dogs Matter but for the larger issue of how addiction impacts families—including our pets. It reminds me that the work we do matters, and it motivates me to continue pushing forward, offering support to those in need and helping them reunite with their dogs as they rebuild their lives.
This is more than just an acknowledgment; it’s a chance to inspire others and show that anyone can make a difference in their community, one small step at a time.
